Golden Needle
Coverlet Eagle Siren Stitchworks
Nineteenth century American coverlets were woven in a variety of colors and patterns. Many were designed to showcase patriotic symbolism. Eagles, stars, historical buildings, and even the founding fathers were commonly woven into these beautiful textiles in shades of red, white, and blue.
I based this design on a framed fragment of a coverlet that I picked up at an antique auction some time ago. Although the original has aged and faded, the eagle and 13 stars (one for each of the original American colonies) are still vivid, and still a delight. I’ve loved having it on my wall, and I hope you enjoy stitching your own version so that you, too, can enjoy this noble bird and her timeless message.
